Council’s dedicated Sport and Recreation Development team is committed to planning, developing and supporting opportunities that keep our community active and connected.

We are your one-stop-shop for everything sport and recreation, whether it’s planning and projects, club development, or promoting physical activity across the region. Sport and recreation plans and strategies

Mackay Sports and Recreation Strategy (2018-2028)

Sport and recreation are a central part of the Mackay region’s lifestyle. Council will prioritise the planning and provision of sport and recreation opportunities that maximise the health, social and economic benefits for the region.

Council recognises that to achieve this vision, partnerships with the community and other levels of government will need to be developed and supported to meet the challenges involved in maintaining existing infrastructure and providing new or upgraded facilities during the next 10 years.

Support for sporting teams and clubs

As part of its ongoing support of the community, council is a proud supporter of the region's four elite sporting teams that compete in sanctioned Queensland Cup competitions.

The Mackay Cutters Rugby League team, Whitsunday Sharks Netball team and Mackay Meteors and Meteorettes Basketball sides contribute significantly to the economic and lifestyle benefits of our community.

Promoting active lifestyles and delivering physical activity remained a key objective of council's health and wellbeing programs.

Council's financial support is tied to a number of tangible outcomes, which the teams are required to meet on an annual basis.

Sports inclusion

A dedicated Sport4All Inclusion Coach is working with Mackay Regional Council to ensure everyone, including people with a disability can participate in local sport.

Sport4All Inclusion Coaches are people with a disability or those with a lived experience of disability, which ensures authentic perspectives and practical insights

Mackay Regional Council welcomes Mackay Sport4All Inclusion Coach, Kristy Bugeja, who is working with the Sport and Recreation team to help people and organisations to challenge stereotypes.

The Sport4All Program is designed to support local sporting clubs and schools to become more inclusive, welcoming, and provide opportunities for people with disability in all aspects of sport. By driving positive change in grassroots sports, the program aims to ensure that everyone can enjoy the benefits of sports when, where and how they choose.

Sport4All is a dynamic award-winning program developed from a collaboration between the Australian Government, Australian Sports Commission and Get Skilled Access, a disability Inclusion Consultancy founded by former Paralympian and Australian of the Year, Dylan Alcott AO.
