About our sewerage

What is sewage?

Sewage (or wastewater) is used water from toilets, sinks, showers and washing machines. It’s 99.97 per cent water, with the rest being dissolved and suspended matter.

Where does it go?

Sewage travels through pipes to one of our four treatment plants, where it's processed into:

  • Treated wastewater: Safely returned to the environment or reused for irrigation.
  • Biosolids: Reused as low-grade fertiliser or soil conditioner.

Common causes of sewer blockages:

  • Wipes: Even “flushable” ones.
  • Fats and grease: Solidify in pipes.
  • Foreign objects: Sanitary items, toys, etc.
  • Tree roots: Invading pipes.
  • Damaged pipes: Cracks or breaks.

How to prevent blockages:

  • Flush only: Toilet paper and human waste.
  • Bin: Wipes, sanitary products, food scraps, fats/oils, chemicals, nappies, etc.
  • Avoid: Planting trees near pipes or covering access pits.

Overflow Relief Gullies (ORG):

ORGs prevent sewage from backing up inside your home. Regularly check that they’re clear and functioning properly.

Who’s responsible?

  • Council: Maintains main sewer lines and manholes.
  • Property owners: Maintain house drains and prevent stormwater from entering the system.

Blocked sewer?

  • Call: 1300 MACKAY (622 529).
  • Council’s issue: We’ll fix it.
  • Your property: Hire a licensed plumber.

Remember: Don’t block your pipes, bin those wipes!
