More than 100 organisations and community support groups will be on hand at this year’s Seniors Expo.

The annual event, being held at the Mackay Showgrounds on Tuesday, September 15, has become a must-do on the calendar for older residents in our community and their carers.

This year the expo is focussed on the themes of connection and celebrating the incredible contributions seniors make in our community.

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said social connection is important in maintaining a healthy mind and body.

“Research from the World Health Organisation shows social isolation and loneliness are important determinants of overall health, including quality of life and longevity,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Loneliness is recognised globally as a serious public health issue, so events like our Seniors Expo go a long way in addressing this issue.”

Among the stallholders taking part in this year’s event are Dementia Together, ATSICHS Elder Care Support, Mackay and District Senior Citizens Association and Mackay Dementia Alliance.

“It’s tremendous to see that there’s interest not only from care and support providers, but volunteer organisations, which provide so much to our community,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Not only do they support some of the most vulnerable in our community, but they provide an opportunity for social connection for volunteers,” he said.

“Seniors often have incredible life experience and knowledge, which is a huge asset to our volunteer groups.”

A free bus will operate from Sarina to the Mackay Showgrounds and back to ensure anyone who wants to attend the Expo can make it.

The Seniors Expo will be held on Tuesday, September 15 from 9am to 12 noon at the Big Shed at the Mackay Showgrounds.
