Explore the Bluewater Trail

Get out and explore the Mackay region along the Bluewater Trail. Take a leisurely stroll or scenic bike ride along the award-winning shared pathway whilst taking in much of the region’s natural beauty.

Stretching approximately 20km along the banks of the Pioneer River, the Bluewater Trail links Mackay’s key attractions, public spaces and natural environments, creating a unique journey through the heart of the city and out to the coast.

The Bluewater Trail connects a range of popular destinations and must-see locations, including:

  • Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens
  • Sandfly Creek Environmental Walkway
  • Catherine Freeman Walk
  • Bluewater Lagoon (free, three-tiered swimming facility)
  • Bluewater Quay Public Open Space
  • Iluka Park

You’ll also find access to other key attractions such as Caneland Central, the River Wharves and Town Beach, as well as public art installations, historic architecture and scenic river views along the way.

A ‘Ring of Activity’ for Everyone

Designed as a ‘ring of activity’, the trail encourages an active lifestyle and provides a safe and accessible environment for all ages and abilities.

Features include:

  • Shared pedestrian and bicycle pathways
  • Raised boardwalks through environmental areas
  • Accessible pathways and facilities
  • Spaces and activities for children and young people

The trail supports community wellbeing by offering diverse recreational opportunities through natural green spaces, environmental corridors and coastal areas.

Nature and Wildlife

A standout feature of the Bluewater Trail is the Sandfly Creek Environmental Walk, a significant habitat for migratory shorebirds. These species visit seasonally and are recognised for their important environmental and conservation value.

Nearby green spaces such as Iluka Park and Quota Park provide additional spots to stop, relax and enjoy the surroundings. With a short detour via the cross-city link, Queen’s Park is also within easy reach.

Fishing and Recreation

The trail offers more than just walking and cycling. Along the way you’ll find:

  • Two public fishing platforms
    • Near Mackay Base Hospital
    • At Bluewater Quay
  • A floating pontoon at Bluewater Quay

These facilities provide excellent opportunities to enjoy fishing and connect with the Pioneer River.

The Bluewater Trail is a key component of Council’s Bluewater Activation Strategy and has been delivered through a collaborative effort with funding support from the Queensland Government and Australian Government.
