From dawn to dusk, 27 Anzac Day services will be held across the Mackay region to commemorate the sacrifice and service of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women.

This year marks a milestone for the Seaforth community, with a new beachside location for their service.

Mayor Greg Williamson said a recently installed flagpole on the beachfront is just the start of what is planned for a dedicated Place of Remembrance.

“The Seaforth RSL sub-branch has done a marvellous job with this concept and plan and it will be particularly moving to be there at dawn on the beachfront as the sun rises,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Dawn and morning services will be held right across the region, with the day ending with a wonderful evening service at Finch Hatton,” he said.

“ANZAC Day is not a celebration of war. War is the absolute scourge on human society and it’s important to remember the hurt that communities and nations feel when the world goes to war.

“This is particularly important this year with what’s currently going on in the world and to show appreciation and thanks for those who’ve served and sacrificed in the past and those who have taken up a uniform and are currently serving.”

The main service and parade in Mackay will start from 8.30am, with groups and students stepping off from Caneland Central and marching towards Jubilee Park.
