Botanic Gardens Open Day

Did you know plants are not the only things growing and flourishing at the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens?

It’s also a place where mental, physical and social health are cultivated, nurtured and supported.

The theme of this year’s Botanic Gardens Week (May 18-24) is Where your health grows, which highlights the significant positive impact botanic gardens can have on individual and community wellbeing.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens offers a peaceful, green environment for people to exercise, relax and learn.

“Botanic gardens aren’t just a place to admire plants, they also provide a free, living, health space that can have significant benefits,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Global research shows a 20 to 30 minute walk in green space can lower cortisol levels, reduce blood pressure and improve mood,” he said.

“A landmark global review of 143 studies found exposure to green space is linked to lower risk of heart disease, Type II diabetes, premature mortality and improved mental health.”

Facilities like the Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens are uniquely placed to deliver the social, mental and physical benefits by providing a safe, welcoming space that encourages connection.

The annual Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens Open Day will be held on May 23 from 8am to midday on the Tropical Sun Lawn, and people of all ages are encouraged to come down and get involved.

The day will include a range of free activities, including learning about native insects and animals, kids yoga, nature craft, art demonstrations and community displays.  A range of natives, orchids and specialty plants will also be for sale.
