Update as of Monday, January 12, 2026, 4pm

Pinnacle and Gargett water supply outage

The local water infrastructure that supplies Gargett and Pinnacle areas will be repaired late this afternoon (Monday, January 12, 2026).

Water supply will likely return to homes tonight; however, council has advised residents must not consume any tap water until full water testing is complete and the “do not consume” notice is lifted.

Water can be used for bathing and washing.

Council will ensure everyone still has access to safe drinking water.

A temporary drinking water supply is available from a water trailer at the Gargett shop, where it will remain overnight.

Residents must bring their own clean containers to collect water.

Thank you for your patience while we work to restore normal supply.

Eungella access

Access to and from Eungella remains closed following extensive damage to Mackay Eungella Road.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has deployed a geotechnical engineer to assess the area.  Council will work closely with TMR to ensure residents are kept informed of expected closure periods once the assessment is complete.

The Local Disaster Management Group is aware of the need to resupply the community with fuel, food and medical supplies and is working with the District Disaster Management Group (DDMG) to arrange emergency access as soon as possible.

Free green waste dumping

Council will be providing free dumping of green waste to residents cleaning up after Tropical Cyclone Koji.

Residents can dump green waste freely at:

  • Paget - open seven days a week
  • Sarina - Monday to Wednesday
  • Gargett transfer station open Monday and Tuesday
  • Marani/Otterburn - Wednesday to Sunday
  • Bucasia and Walkerston green waste transfer stations will be open on the weekend
  • Both Seaforth and Bloomsbury transfer stations will also be able to accept green waste, free of charge until close of business Sunday. These sites are open Thursday to Sunday.

The free disposal of household green waste will be available until close of business on Sunday.

Residents urged to conserve water now

Residents across the Mackay region are being asked to reduce their water usage over the coming days.

Heavy rain and riverine flooding have swept high volumes of leaves, dirt and other debris into the raw water catchment, making the usual demand for drinking water more difficult to meet.

Residents are urged to only use water for essential purposes to help conserve what is in the reservoir while treatment plants are working harder than usual to filter and clean the raw water.

Areas impacted:

  • Mackay township
  • Northern Beaches
  • Sarina township and Sarina Beaches
  • Walkerston township
  • Farleigh
  • The Leap
  • Seaforth
  • Ball Bay
  • Halliday Bay.

Please avoid watering gardens, washing cars or filling up swimming pools over the next couple of days.

Reporting issues

Residents are reminded that they can lodge any road condition issues such as potholes and damages to roads via Snap Send Solve.

Snap Send Solve allows crews to visually assess the damage and schedule repairs and closures appropriately via photos submitted with the incident.

For urgent enquiries, please contact council’s 24-hour Customer Service Centre on 1300 MACKAY (1300 622 529).

Further updates will be provided as soon as more information is available.
