Due to forecast adverse weather conditions, Mackay Regional Council has postponed the planned aerial baiting program in Eungella National Park and Cathu State Forest.
Council is coordinating the feral pig baiting program in partnership with local landholders, with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) providing funding support.
Landholders have been requesting management control programs be carried out due to increased pig activity after successive wet seasons.
Environmental risk assessments by the State Government and operational safeguards have been designed to minimise impacts on native wildlife while addressing the significant environmental damage caused by feral pigs.
These pests also pose a significant threat to primary industry operations in the area.
Aerial baiting is part of a coordinated syndicate program that also includes ground-based measures, such as trapping and shooting.
With the postponement, council will take the opportunity to work with the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation to hold a public information session at Eungella before the rescheduled program is delivered.
