Council on track to top last year’s blood drive effort

Mackay Regional Council is closing in on its blood donation record in the annual Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Local Government Blood Drive.

Staff, volunteers and community members have clocked up almost 40 donations since the blood drive began on July 1, with Mayor Greg Williamson ready to roll up a sleeve and add to the tally.

Mayor Williamson will donate at Lifeblood’s Mackay Donor Centre on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

He said the council is proud to be participating in the blood drive again and has set a friendly challenge to top last year’s effort of 42 donations to save even more lives.

“Community spirit runs strong in the Mackay region and in our council. Giving back to the community is something that comes naturally to our staff - it’s in our veins,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Giving blood is quick, easy and relatively painless. I strongly encourage others to donate. It truly does save lives.”

Lifeblood spokesperson Gwendolyne Camaret said local government organisations always come together to show they are the heart of our community.

“We know Mackay Regional Council staff are incredibly generous donors and we’re so excited to see their tally climbing. Every drop counts and all it takes is an hour of time.

“With one in three people needing blood in their lifetime, you never know when it might be a family member, a neighbour or someone from your community who needs it.”

The demand for blood products is increasing as the population continues to grow. Every week, Lifeblood needs 33,000 blood donations to meet patient needs.

“At this time of year, many of our regular donors are sick with colds, but the need for blood doesn’t stop, so we need new donors to step up and take their place,” Gwendolyne added.

“Whether you work for a local government organisation, volunteer for one, or live within a local government area, there are three Australians out there that will benefit from your blood donation.”
