Disability Expo offers one-stop-shop for services, aids and support

The Mackay Disability Expo, coming up next Thursday (August 15), from 9am until noon, will offer those with an interest in the disability sector free access to more than 60 exhibitors.
The free expo in the Mackay Showgrounds Big Shed will feature a range of both local and out-of-town specialist exhibitors covering everything from prosthetics, physiotherapy and mobility aids to accessible fitness options, accessible housing and all-abilities sports.
Mayor Greg Williamson said next week presented a golden opportunity for those with a passion for accessibility.
“We have the Mackay Disability Expo on the Thursday and then on Friday (August 16) is the free Accessible Active Living Seminar with keynote speakers Kelly Cartwright OAM and Dr. Brendan Burkett OAM,” Mayor Williamson said.
“Both Kelly and Brendan will also be special guests at the Mackay Disability Expo and will be available to chat to the public about their Paralympic achievements from about 11am to noon,” he said.
“It’s tremendous for us to be able to link these events together to promote accessibility in our communities.”
Mayor Williamson said that in Australia, about one in six people are living with disability, which is roughly 4.4 million people.
“When you include people with temporary disabilities resulting from injury or illness, together with friends, families and carers, the number of people who value accessibility and use disability support services and aids is greater still,” he said.
“Events like this are a tremendous way for council to link the community with information, services and products that support them while also providing opportunities for our local clubs and organisations to network and upskill their volunteers and staff on the importance of accessibility.”
Free tickets to the Accessible Active Living Seminar are still available. The seminar runs from 2.30pm to 7pm at Harrup Park Country Club. For more information on the Mackay Disability Expo and the Accessible Active Living Seminar, head to council’s website – mackay.qld.gov.au/disabilityexpo
