Residents encouraged to score big and Discover Mackay

Published on 08 August 2025

To celebrate International Cricket coming to Mackay in August, council is launching a new campaign that will encourage residents and visitors to explore the region.

Mayor Greg Williamson said it was the first time Mackay had hosted men’s international cricket games in Mackay and the new campaign would make the most of the opportunity.

“The Discover Mackay scorecard will challenge residents and people visiting the region to get out and about and experience the magic of Mackay,” Mayor Williamson said.

“There are six challenges that teams can complete, from submitting a photo of their favourite Mackay location to posting a photo of a local rainforest, park or botanic garden with the Discover Mackay hashtag on social media,” he said.

“From the golden beaches to the lush green rainforest, we have so much to offer in our beautiful region and we want to share this with people during their visit.

“To take part in the challenge, residents or visitors to the region need to register their team on the council website, download a scorecard and start completing the challenges.

“When they finish their innings, they need to upload their scorecard on the council website.

“As part of the campaign, local artists have also been engaged to create temporary but vibrant cricket-inspired chalk art around the region.

“Council’s Arts Development team has worked with local artists Bridgett Zimmerman, from Sarina, and Winka (Vyonka) von Fahland from Mackay.”

Intersport Mackay have come on board as a major sponsor for the campaign and are providing the major prizes for the top three batting totals, with a total of $2550 in prizes up for grabs.

First place will win a sporting pack valued at $1200, second place will win a sporting pack valued at $850 and third place will win a sporting pack valued at $500.

Any team who hits a half century or century will also receive a prize pack with various Discover Mackay and Cricket Australia merchandise, including beach towels, cricket balls (stress balls), water bottles, drawstring bags, mini cricket bats, cricket jigsaw puzzles and more.

During registration, teams can also upload a photo in their favourite team colours for a chance to win the best dressed team award and score a $300 Sarina Sugar Shed hamper.

Local businesses can also get involved and decorate their business in their favourite team colours for a chance to win a $2500 advertising voucher, thanks to Southern Cross Austereo.

The campaign was launched yesterday (August 7) at Fifth Lane and will run until the end of August.

Mackay Isaac Tourism and Harrup Park Country Club have also thrown their support behind the campaign with their facilities being distribution points for the scorecards.
