What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is caused by a virus spread through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Typical symptoms of dengue fever include the sudden onset of fever, extreme tiredness, intense headache, muscle and joint pain, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, rash, minor bleeding from the nose or gums and/or heavy menstrual periods.

Symptoms can range from mild to severe.

If you suspect you or someone in your family has dengue fever, seek medical advice immediately.

How You Can Prevent Dengue

Follow these tips to stop mozzies in their tracks:

  1. Tip it out: Empty water from buckets and containers and store them in a safe, dry spot.
Dengue Damo hot tip: Do not store empty containers in your wife's direct path to the clothesline. If she trips over them, the mozzies will be the least of your problems.
  2. Patch it up: Repair any holes or tears in your flyscreens.
Dengue Damo hot tip: Your daughter’s tutu is not a substitute for flyscreen, no matter how creative you’re feeling.
  3. Clean out gutters: Gutters clogged with leaves are a mozzie breeding paradise, so clean them out regularly.
Dengue Damo hot tip: Make sure your wife isn’t walking underneath you while doing this. Leaves are not a cute hair accessory.
  4. Use mozzie repellent: Apply insect repellent, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
Dengue Damo hot tip: A little goes a long way. Apply too much and you’ll be sliding around like you’re in a soap commercial.
  5. Keep your lawn mowed: Mosquitoes love long grass, so keep it trimmed.
Dengue Damo hot tip: Do not use the whipper snipper as a mozzie-slaying device—it’s for grass, not bugs.
  6. Clean up around the yard: Remove rubbish, old tyres, and anything that can collect water.
Dengue Damo hot tip: If you find gold bullion, don’t toss it—think of all the mozzie spray you could buy.
  7. Use surface spray: Spray entrances and potential breeding areas to keep mosquitoes away.
Dengue Damo hot tip: Avoid your eyes, or your flyscreens won’t be the only thing needing a patch.
