Consultation extended: Sarina Field of Dreams Precinct Activation Plan

Following requests from the public, community consultation for the Sarina Field of Dreams Precinct Activation Plan has been extended to Sunday, February 15, 2026.
Due to the community interest in the project, council wants to ensure stakeholders have as much time as possible to review the draft plan and provide feedback.
Council is inviting residents, visitors and stakeholders to have their say on the future activation and reinvigoration of this iconic precinct.
An online survey, along with the draft activation plan, outcomes report and a factsheet, is available at connectingmackay.com.au/sarina-field-of-dreams
Hardcopy surveys are also available at council's customer service centres and libraries and you can request a copy through council's Community Engagement Team on 1300 MACKAY (622 529) or engagement@mackay.qld.gov.au.
Feedback from the community will help shape the final activation plan.
A drop-in information session will also be held onsite to allow community members to speak directly with the project team and fill out a survey.

About the project
The Sarina Field of Dreams is a well-loved community precinct located at the southern entrance to Sarina and serves as a key gateway to the Mackay region. Home to several historic buildings, the Mackay Region Visitor Information Centre, Sarina Art Gallery, Sarina Arts and Craft Centre and the award-winning Sarina Sugar Shed, the precinct provides a unique experience for locals and visitors alike.
Its central open green space, playground, barbeque facilities and large shade trees further contribute to its community value.
To explore opportunities for future activation, council has engaged specialists in urban design and place activation to work closely with key stakeholders and the broader community.
Initial engagement included stakeholder meetings followed by a two-day enquiry by design workshop, where participants collaborated to test and develop design ideas in real time.
The insights gathered have informed a draft precinct activation plan, which balances community aspirations with feasibility and available resources.
