Disc golf course (John Breen Park)

Safety first

• Never throw when other players, park users or wildlife are within range.
• Always give non-players the right of way.
• Beware of your surroundings and environment.

Course courtesy

• Adhere to out-of-bounds areas and course signage.
• Keep noise to a minimum out of respect for other park users and nearby residents.
• Stand behind the player that is throwing until the throw is complete.
• Help new players learn the rules.
• Allow faster groups to play through when possible.
• Please put rubbish in the bin and help keep it clean.
• Do not alter the course (trees, bushes, etc.) in any way.

Mandatory
A mandatory (or "mando") is a marked object, like a tree or pole - that your disc must pass on a specific side, as shown by arrows on each individual tee hole sign.

Out of bounds (OB)
If your entire disc is visible in the area marked on the course signs as OB, your disc is out of bounds. You must take your next throw from 1 metre inside the course from where your disc crossed out of bounds. Additionally, going out of bounds incurs a one-throw penalty, which is added to your score for that hole.

Permanent water hazards, public roads and walking paths are always out of bounds. Do not enter the water to retrieve lost discs, safety comes first!

Lie
A lie is the spot where your disc comes to rest after a throw. Take your next throw from directly behind the discs resting place.

Tee throws
Each hole begins with a tee throw. Tee throws must be completed within or behind the designated tee area.

Throwing order
The player with the least number of strokes from the previous hole is the first to tee off on the next hole. After teeing off, the player whose disc is furthest from the basket always throws first.

Fairway throws
A fairway throw is any throw made after the first (tee) throw. Fairway throws must be made from directly behind your lie. If your disc is more than 10 metres from the basket, you can do a normal run-up and follow-through. But if your disc is within 10 metres, you must stay behind your lie and not step past it until the disc is at rest.

Completion of hole
A disc that comes to rest in the basket or chain constitutes successful completion of that hole.

Do I need to bring my own discs?
Yes, this is a BYO (bring your own) disc golf course. Please bring your own discs to play. For safety and best performance, please use proper disc golf discs, as they are designed differently from regular frisbees. If you don’t own any discs, disc golf sets are available online through multiple retailers, including course sponsor Kingfisher Golf

Is the course free to use?
Yes, the course is free and open to the public, except on professional disc golf competition days. Please visit the Mackay Disc Golf Facebook page for competition dates and times.

Do I need to book a time to play?
No booking is required. The course operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be courteous and allow faster groups to play through.

Are there toilets nearby?
Yes, public toilets and water fountains are located near the main car park and playground area.

What should I do if I lose my disc in the water?
Under no circumstances is anybody to enter the water to attempt to retrieve lost discs. Please adhere to all course signage to avoid throwing in out of bounds areas.

Please note:  Any disc that lands in the pond is considered lost and cannot be retrieved.
