The Mackay Animal Management Centre is where council houses and cares for impounded or surrendered animals.
The staff at the centre are dedicated and passionate about animal welfare and nothing makes them happier than seeing an animal returned to its owner or finding a new home.
Pet registration fees help to support a successful rescue and refugee service by our Animal Management Centre.
Location
The centre is located on Strickland Road, North Mackay, across the road from the Mount Bassett Cemetery. This can be accessed from Harbour Road.
Opening hours
Monday to Friday 11.30am to 1.30pm

One of the most important benefits of pet registration and identification is that it allows an effective rescue and refuge service.
When council finds a roaming pet, it is taken to the Animal Management Centre (AMC) and added to the Impounded Animals Register below. If the pet is registered or microchipped, council will attempt to contact the owner as soon as possible.
- Registered or microchipped pets are held for up to five days
- Pets without identification, such as a microchip or registration tag, are held for up to three days
Every reasonable effort to reunite registered pets with their owners quickly and safely are made by our team. After these time periods, the pets may be made available for adoption.
Council regularly updates the Impounded Animals Register. This gives a description of the animal, where and when it was found, an estimated age and if it is available for adoption.

Rescue and release fees
Release fees include the cost of rescue and transport to the AMC. If the pet is not currently registered, the release fee will also include registration for the current year. Additional daily fees apply to cover the animal’s care, feeding and housing while at the centre.
There are always animals looking for loving homes, so if you’re considering a pet, make sure you check if your next furry friend is available for adoption from the Animal Management Centre (AMC)
If the team has been unable to find their owners after a set period of time, the pets may be made available for adoption. View the Impounded Animal Register for pets currently available for adoption.

So, you’ve found your furever friend, what next?
Visit the AMC during opening hours or contact council to arrange a suitable time to meet the animal. Council’s vets conduct a health check and council will arrange a desexing voucher for the animal. For adoption costs, view council's fees and charges or enquire with council or the AMC team.
Fostering and adoption community groups
Mackay is very fortunate to have several passionate groups that have a network of foster carers.
These groups purchase / retrieve animals from the Animal Management Centre and place them with one of their carers until a furever home can be found.
Each group has requirements that must be met prior to an adoption being approved, so contact the organisation for details.
These groups include Mackay Pet Rescue, Mackay Animal Rescue Service and the RSPCA which have websites and can be followed on social media.
