Almost $50,000 in funding has been awarded to a range of arts projects in the region.
Local playwriters, Traci Leizke and Cassandra Ramsay will use their more than $12,000 grant to develop two productions, which showcase life in Mackay, the region’s history and challenges.
The first play, entitled ‘If you dare, scream at the Gods’, reflects immigrant heritage, intergenerational living and resilience in cane farming families.
‘Find your home’, explores ageing, housing stress, FIFO culture and care between generations.
Both pieces will involve audience input and feedback, ensuring there’s unique engagement and not just spectating.
Local band, Home Improvement, received $13,000 in the first round of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants to record new music, following the release of a three-track EP in September.
They will also use the money to promote live music in Mackay and encourage other artists to perform in the area
Co-chair of the Arts, Culture and Heritage Advisory Committee, Councillor Heath Paton, said these were great examples of the incredible creativity in the region.
“RADF has a long history of supporting emerging and established artists to further their dreams and give back to our local community,” Cr Paton said.
“A thriving and supported arts community is an important part of life in regional Australia,” he said.
Cr Paton, said it was great opportunity for creative residents to grow their craft and inspire others.
“We have some very talented artists in the region, across a diverse range of mediums and council is very proud to support their endeavours,” he said.
“A strong and vibrant arts community is a vital part of any thriving region.”
The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Mackay Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
