Inclusive Communities Reference Group

The Inclusive Communities Reference group (ICRG) provides council with expert advice on matters related to diversity, access and inclusion within the context of the Inclusive Communities Action Plan 2023-2027.

Membership comprises of local community service organisations and groups, carers, people with lived experience, and council representatives. Community representation will be sort from areas including:

  • People with disabilities
  • Older people
  • Young people (aged 15 - 24 yrs)
  • Family members, carers, and guardians of people with disability and older people
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • Australian South Sea Islander people
  • Community members who identify as being part of the LGBTQIA+ community
  • Culturally and linguistically diverse community members

What is an Inclusive Community

An inclusive community, values and embraces diversity ensuring that all members, regardless of their backgrounds, are fully involved and engaged and genuinely feel a sense of belonging. It promotes equal opportunities and eliminates barriers to participation.

The ICRG members will:
  • act as an information resource to council on matters of access and inclusion
  • participate in the delivery of projects as deemed appropriate
  • advocate for a universally accessible environment and socially inclusive community for the Mackay community
  • Positions on the ICRG are voluntary and official meetings are expected to be held at a minimum of two meetings per year
Council seeks applicants who meet three or more of the below criteria:
  • reside, work or study in the Mackay local government area
  • have lived experience of disability or are caring for someone with disability
  • have strong community networks and linkages relevant to access and inclusion
  • have current involvement in the community and an understanding of access and inclusion
  • have a willingness to make active contribution to discussion
  • have a capacity to commit to the ICRG for the required duration (12 to 18 months)
