Council encourages residents to show our small businesses some love
Published on 30 April 2025
The Mackay region has more than 10,300 registered small businesses. With May being Queensland Small Business Month, now is the perfect time to show your local businesses some love.
Council is partnering with local stakeholders to deliver and promote a range of activities to celebrate and highlight Queensland Small Business Month in the Mackay region.
Mayor Greg Williamson said small businesses were the backbone of the Mackay region economy and by supporting them, residents were investing in our community.
“Our small businesses employ tens of thousands of people and money spent with them almost always comes back into our community, so now is the time to show them our support,” Mayor Williamson said.
“Obviously the easiest way to support local small businesses is to shop with them – rather than buying online, buy local,” he said.
“More than that though, we’d really like to call out what makes small businesses shine – the original products, local knowledge and great service.
“Small businesses often have tiny advertising budgets compared to big corporations, so by leaving them a positive review on Google or their Facebook page, or by giving them a shout out on your social media, you can have a big impact.
“If everyone put up just one positive review or shout out for their favourite small business, it would generate millions of dollars’ worth of organic advertising and have a tremendous impact locally.”
When sharing the love about your favourite small businesses on social media, use hashtags like #SmallBusinessMonth and #ShopLocal to help spread the message.
