Council is taking action to control the invasive European Red Fox population at East Point to protect native wildlife in the area.
Humane traps have already been deployed in the dunes and six controlled fox shooting operations have been scheduled to occur over the next few weeks.
They are scheduled to take place on the following dates, weather permitting:
These measures are critical in addressing the growing number of turtle nests and hatchlings being preyed on by foxes. Migratory shorebird populations are also at risk due to increased fox activity in the area. In the interest of public safety, residents are advised to follow the instructions of all signage at the site and avoid the exclusion zone during scheduled shootings. The shootings will be carried out by a highly trained shooter and spotter, with strict safety protocols in place. Pet owners are also reminded to keep their animals on a leash at all times when walking in the area as the fox traps will remain in place until March. While the traps are designed to minimise risks to pets, a trapped dog may experience some discomfort. Council appreciates the community’s cooperation in protecting our region’s vulnerable native species.
