Kick-start your career with council’s academic bursary

Published: 11 Mar 2019

Calling all university students: Here is your chance to gain valuable work experience and financial assistance to help kick-start your career.

Council has five academic bursaries up for grabs, worth $5000 each, plus work experience with Mackay Regional Council.

Cody Vella, 20, was a recipient of council’s bursary program last year and said the work experience was invaluable.

“I am doing a marketing degree and I was able to work with the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre team,” he said.

“This allowed me to see firsthand what tools they use to promote the entertainment centre to the rest of the world.”

Cody said the financial assistance also helped him move into student accommodation to be closer to the university.

Applications for this year’s Academic Bursaries are currently open and close on Thursday, April 18.

To be eligible for a council bursary, students must be from the Mackay region – preferably studying in the region – and in their second-last year of studies.

They must also be studying in a skills shortage area including:

  • Engineering
  • Information Technology/Digital Media
  • Planning
  • Environmental Health/Science
  • Workplace Health and Safety/Emergency Management
  • Business (Accounting, marketing, HR, public relations or social innovation).

Cr Fran Mann said council hoped by offering these bursaries it would be able to retain these professionals in the Mackay region.

“The Mackay region is a great place to work and the academic bursary program gives students a taste of what it’s like to work in their chosen field and the opportunity to make great work connections,” she said.
