Blueprint for sustainable growth

The Shaping Our Community strategy was developed in 2014.

This regional sustainability strategy considered the impact of rapid urban growth between 2002 and 2013 and future requirements for land, infrastructure and financial capacity to support sustainable urban growth.

The strategy informed the Mackay Region Planning Scheme and provision of sufficient land to accommodate future industries, commercial precincts and housing choice.

Independent report on industrial land supply in Mackay region

In order to plan for industrial land supply in the next 20 years, council conducted a detailed analysis of industrial land market drivers, trends and land requirements.

On October 14, 2020, council endorsed an Independent Report on Industrial Land Supply. The report considered future growth scenarios with a detailed analysis of industrial land supply and recommendations to guide planning for industrial land supply to 2040.

The report recognises the strong local industrial base with world class companies in the Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) sector and available bulk port and coal terminals that will continue to support and attract industries to the Mackay region. The report noted the significant increase of developed industrial land in the Paget industrial area from 110ha to 333ha between 2000 and 2020 that corresponded with coal mining construction in the Bowen Basin.

Council continues to monitor industrial land take up and the independent report is used as guide to appropriate strategic planning for industrial land supply to 2040.
