Council shines light on legendary neighbours

Mackay Regional Council wants to hear about them!

Mayor Greg Williamson said council was running the My Legendary Neighbour campaign in the lead up to Neighbour Day on Sunday, March 28.

“What we want you to do is nominate your legendary neighbour, or maybe your street or cul-de-sac,” Mayor Williamson said.

“We’ve got some share platters and barbecue packs as prizes and all you have to do to go in the draw is tell us in 200 words or less what’s great about your neighbour.

“Maybe you have a carpool setup or share a meal on a regular basis – maybe it’s something as simple as seeing a smiling face over the fence and getting a warm greeting each day.

“Sometimes the simple things make a big difference.”

Mayor Williamson said the campaign encouraged people to think about their relationships with their neighbours.

He said close neighbours created resilient communities and our region had seen that time and time again.

“When there’s a natural disaster, it’s neighbours who help each other to prepare and who pick up the pieces in the recovery process,” he said.

“Never was that truer than during the bushfires when residents were on the front lines defending each other’s properties in terrible conditions.

“And last year, when we saw countless examples of residents looking after one another, especially the elderly, during lockdown.

“Things like picking them up a few groceries or medications and just checking in made such a difference when people were feeling isolated.”
