MECC auditorium closure extended

The MECC has extended its closure of the Auditorium, North Foyer and Lynette Denny Space.

These areas, shutdown following significant water damage and air-conditioning failure during heavy storms over Christmas, will now remain closed until August 31.

The southern wing of the MECC, including the Convention Centre, remains open.

Council’s Community Services Director Janine McKay said delays in securing contractors to undertake extensive remediation works had led to the extended closure.

“We will move as many events as possible to the MECC’s Convention Centre, but some of the shows will need to be cancelled,” Ms McKay said.

“Unfortunately, we simply can’t accommodate moving all the events to the southern wing of the MECC,’’ she said.

“Over the past couple of months, we’ve relocated several shows to the Convention Centre to avoid cancellations.

“However, that constant turnaround can’t be sustained in terms of maintenance, cleaning, and staffing.”

Ms McKay said MECC staff would be contacting clients with bookings in the Auditorium, North Foyer and Lynette Denny Space up until August 31.

“Anyone with tickets for affected events up until August 31 will be contacted with advice on refunds or alternative arrangements,” she said.
