NEDC21 to be hosted by Mackay

Mackay has been announced as next year’s host of the National Economic Development Conference (NEDC21). The flagship event of Economic Development Australia (EDA), NEDC is Australia’s largest gathering of economic development leaders, and will be held from October 13 - 15, 2021.

The announcement was made at NEDC20, being hosted by Liverpool City Council this week, as a virtual event. “We know through the discussions we have been having with Australian and international economic development leaders at NEDC20, that 2021 will be a year of transformation. Mackay is a region on a journey of economic transformation and is the ideal host for an event of this importance” said Economic Development Australia CEO, Jacqueline Brinkman.

“The theme of NEDC21 will be centred around transformation through circular economy, and Mackay embodies that approach,” said Ms Brinkman.

Mackay Mayor, Mayor Greg Williamson said he is delighted to be welcoming delegates to the region and described NEDC21 as the ideal way for the city to lead the national discussion on economic development, as well as showcase the region’s diverse local industries and world-class innovation.

“Mackay is on a journey of reinventing itself, embracing transformation to capture future opportunities to ensure our region remains relevant and continues to grow and thrive,” said Mayor Williamson.

“Mackay is a thriving regional centre. Our local economy is diverse and supported by strong activity in the resources sector, resurgence in agribusiness, and growth in construction, logistics, education and tourism. Our economic landscape is innovative, forward-thinking and full of exciting opportunities.” Mayor Williamson said.

EDA CEO, Jacqueline Brinkman confirmed NEDC21 will go ahead regardless of COVID restrictions in 2021. “The conference will proceed in person, on-line or as a hybrid event. But, I am sure, like me, delegates will want to attend in person when they consider the 31 beaches, stunning islands and other attractions on Mackay’s doorstep!”
