New basketball court will be a slam dunk for Glenella residents

Published: 04 Jan 2022

There will be fun for children of all ages at Northview Park once new upgrades are complete.

Council is installing a full-sized basketball court at the popular park in Glenella, which will complement the works completed to the playground area last year.

The project is scheduled to begin this month and will continue until April 2022, weather permitting. Work will be conducted between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, with some weekend work expected.

Mayor Greg Williamson said Northview Park was one of the region’s most popular parks and playgrounds.

“The installation of a new basketball court means there will be something for both older and younger age groups to enjoy,” he said.

“The improvement works also include new lighting for the basketball court, footpaths, additional safety fencing and landscaping in the area adjacent the children’s playground.

“We have tried to keep as many of the existing trees as possible. Two trees will need to be removed, but we have plans to plant plenty more shade trees in their place.”

The playground at Northview Park will remain operational while these works are under way. However, there will be some noise and dust disturbances during this time.

The toilets will remain open for the majority of this project, but access may need to be temporarily restricted to allow for construction of the footpath connection.

Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen welcomed the commencement of work.

“This funding program allows our hard-working local councils to address some of the many needs in the region to improve liveability and also provide jobs for locals,” he said.

“We get the best outcome for each region because councils themselves determine the priorities needed whether it be upgrades to local roads, bike paths, community halls, playgrounds, parks and sports facilities, or improved access to public facilities.”
