New strategy aims to grab larger slice of lucrative RV market

A bold vision to transform the Mackay region into a chosen destination for recreational vehicle travellers has been endorsed by council.

The Mackay Region RV Strategy has a range of actions aimed at capturing an even larger portion of the flourishing RV market.

The strategy, prepared for council by consultants Otium Planning Group following consultation with stakeholders and the community, was endorsed by an ordinary meeting of council today.

Strategic actions include developing a RV communications and marketing strategy and wayfinding plan.

These would be done in collaboration with the likes of Mackay Isaac Tourism and industry bodies, such as Caravan and Motorhome Club of Australia.

Mayor Greg Williamson said there were also actions in relation to new infrastructure to cater for the RV market, including planning for parking and short-stay sites close to the CBD.

“A key suggestion from a survey of caravan and camping park users was to improve parking and short-stay sites in the CBD and major shopping centres,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Many RV travellers now carry bicycles and e-bikes or scooters and this expands the range of options for day parking locations providing there are safe connections, such as bikeways,’’ he said.

“The Bluewater Trail and supporting bikeway networks are a key strength for our CBD.”

Mayor Williamson said the strategy also identified the need for a similar plan for RV parking in townships throughout our region.

“Council will also continue discussions with Sunwater regarding the upgrades at Kinchant and Eungella Dams and investigating the potential for a new RV Site at Teemburra Dam,’’ he said.

All actions identified in the strategy are subject to future funding submissions, the economic environment and operational budget allocations of council.
