Entertain the kids these school holidays with the following great activities across the region.

Kids holiday workshop

Kids aged eight to 12 years are invited to join local artist and tutor Traci Lietzke for a two-hour art workshop. Young participants will try fun and surprising techniques that explore colour, paint, paper, collage, stamping and more to make their own artist’s book to take home! Book via

Cool down and splash around with the whole family at the free, three-tiered Bluewater Lagoon. Overlooking the picturesque Pioneer River in the heart of the Mackay City Centre, the facilities provide the ideal stinger-free environment for kids and adults alike. History tours

Take a step back in time and educate your children on the history of our region. Explore the iconic Greenmount Homestead. As one of Mackay’s most valued historic attractions, the grounds contain several buildings including a 1915 Queenslander homestead which houses a collection of more than 20,000 historical items.

Manga drawing workshops with David Lovegrove

David Lovegrove is a writer/illustrator and one of Australia’s best-known manga artists. His manga workshops for young people have been voted ‘most popular’ during Japan Week in Brisbane. These sessions are via video conference for young adults aged 12 to 18 years.

Buck is a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life gets turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Alaskan Yukon in the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail-delivery dog sled team, Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime as he ultimately finds his true place in the world. This program is for young adults aged 12 to 18 years.

Have you heard of the Bizarre Looper, seen the felt docile spiny leaf insects, caught the new arrival of Tawny Coster butterflies, or watched the action of the bungee jumping caterpillars?Come along to the Botanic Gardens meeting room and investigate these live insects, see photos and learn information with Maya Harrison of ‘Maya’s Nature’, then go on a walk to find where some of these insects might live in the Botanic Gardens. This workshop is suitable for school-aged children. Please bring a hat and water bottle and children  are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Drop into the Botanic Gardens meeting room and join us to create a decorative flower or garden ornament. Leave your amazing creations with us to be included in a colourful display at our  Botanic Gardens Open Day on Saturday, May 29.

Please bring your own plastic soft drink bottle (1.25L or 2L is best), we will supply paint, paint brushes and other craft materials to create your masterpiece!

Parental supervision is required, all ages welcome (adults included). Please note, waiting periods may apply as numbers are limited in meeting room for social distancing requirements.

Creatures of the gardens self-guided trail

Pick up a self-guided activity sheet from Botanic Gardens Visitor Information Centre or under the noticeboard (opposite café) and follow the instructions to find all ten stops where you can learn about the creatures of the gardens. Please note, copies are limited over the weekends and public holidays in the noticeboard.

Put a sticker in the box for each question you can correctly answer on all the creatures you learn about.  Copies can also be downloaded from (please note you will need to supply your own stickers if downloaded from home).

Meet at the Botanic Gardens Visitor Information Centre

Join our knowledgeable guides for a leisurely walk in the gardens and learn about our Living Collection of plants. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Botanic Endeavour 250 adventure hunt

Become an epic voyager and discover some of the local native plants that were collected 250 years ago by botanists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander. Along the way, let the kids discover some fun facts about some of the plants that were collected!

Jamie's Ministry of Food Australia (Mackay school holiday program)

Join us for our popular school holiday five-day Jamie's Ministry of Food cooking classes, where you'll learn delicious Jamie Oliver recipes, handy kitchen tips and professional skills! Classes are held over the course of one week across five days, occurring at the same time each day.

Bring a container to take your food home in. We'll provide all the equipment, ingredients, and an apron. You must be wearing closed-toe shoes to participate and have long hair tied back. Participants must be aged 12 years or older to attend. Participants aged 12-16 years require adult supervision.

Sarina Sugar Shed tours are a delight for all ages! On the tour, you will see the special miniature sugar processing and distilling equipment that has been sourced from all over the world! Along with the processing mill, there are multimedia presentations, souvenir shop, picnic areas, easy parking and wheelchair-friendly access. Children’s activities will be running throughout the school holidays.

Kids and adults alike will love the beautiful and rare orchids on display at the Ken Burgess Display House (commonly known as the Orchid House). Stroll through the display, which houses an astounding variety of orchids, all flowering at different times of the year. Enjoy the natural surrounds of Queens Park whilst you explore the Orchid House. Make a day of it and bring along a picnic and let the kids enjoy the playground.
