Sleek new bus interchange on its way!

Published: 19 Sep 2023

Local contractor Woollam Constructions has been awarded the tender for stage two of the Caneland Station bus interchange project.

The $2 million stage two works are being funded by the Department of Transport and Main Roads and project managed by Mackay Regional Council.

Stage two includes the construction of a 60 metre long, double sided bus shelter on Mangrove Road and a three bay bus layover between Caneland Central access and Matsuura Drive roundabout.

Stage one was completed in February and included the installation of a signalised crossing on Mangrove Road, a bus laydown area on Mangrove Road between Victoria Street and Matsuura Drive, and landscaping works.

State Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert said customers will benefit from the new location and improved bus station infrastructure that will provide greater comfort and safety.

“This is the busiest stop on our local network, and its repositioning from the back of Caneland Central to Mangrove Road will reduce travel times and allow for future network improvements,” Ms Gilbert said.

“The station will also have improved amenities such as being enclosed for better weather protection, more seating, better lighting and visibility to ensure customer safety,” she said.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the new interchange would modernise our local facilities.

“This station has been designed to meet accessibility standards and provide people using mobility aids and prams with easier access to and from the bus,” Mayor Williamson said.

“The owner of Caneland Central Shopping Centre, Sentinel Property Group, will also be constructing a covered pathway from the shopping centre to the new bus station to provide patrons with undercover access to the shopping centre,” he said.

Works will commence onsite this month and are expected to be completed before Christmas, weather permitting.
