Joining & Borrowing

Library membership

Library membership is freely available to permanent residents of the Mackay Regional Council area.

To join the library, simply visit your local branch and provide proof of residential address (must be within the Mackay Regional Council area). You will also need to agree to the library's terms and conditions.

Children 15 years and under must be joined by a parent or guardian who must show proof of current address.

You can also join the library online. However, you will need to visit a library branch within three months to make your membership official.

Borrowing and returning

All new members receive a library card. The library card enables members to borrow books and items from all council libraries. Library cards must be shown each time an item is borrowed.

Members can borrow up to 20 items at a time for two weeks (14 days).

Limits apply to some collections (eg magazines). Library staff may request a limit on the number of items on a single topic to ensure equity of access for all library members.

Items can be renewed twice, as long as the item has not been reserved. Members can renew their items through the online library catalogue, over the phone or in person at any of our library locations.

Reservations can be placed on items that are not currently available or which are held at other branches. To place a reservation, access the online library catalogue or ask a library staff member to help. Members can have up to 20 items reserved at any one time.

Library items can be returned to any library branch regardless of where they were borrowed. Libraries have after hours access chutes which can be used by members 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Membership to council libraries is free, however some additional services may attract fees.

Council libraries charge 10 cents per item for each day an item is overdue. Members cannot use library services if they have accrued $50 or more in unpaid fees.

Customers will be charged for lost or damaged library items. Charges will be at the discretion of library staff.

Computers and WiFi

Full library membership entitles 90 (ninety) minutes free access to public computers.  Fees apply after 90 minutes.  Free WiFi is available at all library branches excluding the Mobile Library.

Members are notified with a reminder notice either by email or SMS when an item is more than seven days overdue. In the interest of promoting green solutions, overdue notices are no longer able to be mailed out. The onus is on the customer to ensure their items are returned on time. Reservation notices will still be posted to customers who cannot access email or SMS. Email notices benefit customers because they can be received more quickly than notices sent through the post. To make the change simply contact your local library.

The first time you receive an email notice from the library it may be diverted to your bulk, spam or junk mail folder. To avoid missing out on a notice:

  • Check your junk mail folder regularly for an email from council libraries
  • Add Mackay Libraries ( to your 'safe list' or list of contacts

Inter-library loans

We try to keep our collections relevant to our customers, however you may wish to borrow an item which we do not hold. Members can suggest items for purchase at any branch or using our online library catalogue. We will consider your request and will purchase the item if it is in print and meets our stock selection criteria. Alternatively we will attempt to source it from another library outside the Mackay region.

  • Inter-library loans from a reciprocal borrowing library - Free.
  • Inter-library loans from a specialist library - $16.50 (We will always check with you before we proceed).
