Disability is a complex and multi-dimensional experience and can occur at any stage of a person’s life. With almost one in five Australians living with a disability (ABS 2018), the Mackay Regional Council Libraries has developed an All Abilities Program that provides an opportunity to meet other community members in friendly and fun environments, while enabling their growth of creativity, literacy and learning at all ability levels.

We respect and value the contribution and participation of people of all abilities within our community and workforce, and provide equal access to all opportunities so every person can reach their full potential.

	Next Chapter Book Club The Next Chapter Book Club is for adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It provides an opportunity to read and learn, make friends and have fun together in our library settings. Does this sound like something you would be interested in? To discover if Next Chapter Book Club is for you, and how we can support your group, contact our Community Outreach team at your local library. This program is in affiliation with the Next Chapter Book Club and is for adults aged 18 and above.
	All Abilities Sensory Space This space at the Gordon White Library allows our members, carers and family members an area that is centred around exploration using the senses of sight, sound, touch and smell at your own pace. Parental and carer’s supervision is required.
	Sensory Collection Our Sensory Collection provides resources to help with the understanding and development of children and adults with special needs. These resources support a range of developmental needs, including fine and gross motor skills, speech and language skills and imaginative play.
	Quiet Hour We are making the library experience easier for people with hypersensitivity to light and noise in their surroundings by dimming the lights and softening the noise to a minimum. Click here for locations and times.
